Maria Popova @ Brain Pickings is going to be very dangerous to me. She links to some amazing stuff, including clueing me into this beautiful book. It’s got all my favorites: great illustrations, beautiful colors, smart, interesting info in an easily digestible form. I wouldn’t have known it was so great from the cover, but if you get a chance, peak inside and be overwhelmed with it’s marvelousness!
I have some wonderful pictures of cats from the the Elf Book “Snuggles: A Real Live Animals Book”, published by Rand McNally, 1958.
I am going to make a journal from the part of the cover I can salvage, it is pretty chewed up, and these pictures look like they might have had some moisture damage at some point, though they do not smell and the colors are bright.
I decided to try to do the S-Hinge, so you can see the edges of the paper, to reference that it is from a book, but worthy of framing and hanging up. This is what I came up with today. I am mulling it over.
1969, Pictures by T. Izawa and S. Hijikata
This is a box with books and comics inside, it is all that and so much more. It is a big ole gift to yourself, and I just saw it on Amazon for $25, which is half price, and is crazy because local stores cannot compete with that, but it is an amazing price and you get so much for your money!
The colors are so deep and the printing so crisp. The faux Golden Book isn’t perfect, it looks fantastic, but the foil on the side is coming off, but who care, it is a faux Golden Book! Do I sound like an asshole if I mention that Chris Ware lived above my best friend in Chicago in the 1990’s? So so much of his work reminds me of that time and place in Chicago.
Also I cannot let my kids see these because some of the pictures would upset them, maybe traumatize them.
